1. “Candyman” (1hr 31m) – A 2021 supernatural horror film and spiritual sequel to the 1992 film of the same name. Directed by Nia DaCosta and produced by Jordan Peele. Candyman is a mysterious and vengeful spirit with a hook for a hand. He is summoned by saying his name five times in front of a mirror.
2. “Tales from the Hood” (1hr 38m) – A 1995 horror film directed by Rusty Cundieff and produced by Spike Lee. The movie weaves together four short horror stories with a wraparound narrative. The wraparound story features three men who visit a mortuary where they meet an eccentric mortician named Mr. Simms. He then proceeds to tell them four tales while showing them around the mortuary.
3. “The Haunted Mansion” (1h 27m) – A 2003 family comedy directed by Rob Minkoff. The film follows the Evers family. The Evers family is struggling to spend quality time together. Their lives take an unexpected turn when Jim (played by Eddie Murphy) is contacted by a mysterious woman named Madame Leota to sell an old mansion.
4. “Vampire in Brooklyn” (1h 42m) – A 1995 horror-comedy starring Eddie Murphy. The film tells the story of Maximillian (played by Eddie Murphy), the last surviving vampire of a Caribbean clan, who travels to New York City in search of a half-vampire, half-human woman who can potentially continue his bloodline. Jimmy’s spirit is awakened when a group of kids accidentally resurrect him by breaking into his old residence. He returns as a vengeful and supernatural force, seeking retribution against those who wronged him while trying to protect his old neighborhood from the drug dealers who have taken over.
6. “Ganja & Hess” (1h 18m) – A 1973 independent horror film directed by Bill Gunn. The film revolves around Dr. Hess Green (played by Duane Jones), a wealthy anthropologist who becomes a vampire after being stabbed with an ancient African dagger. After his transformation, he develops a need for human blood to survive but struggles with the moral and ethical implications of his new condition.
7. “Def by Temptation” (1hr 35m) – A 1990 horror film written and directed by James Bond III. It’s a low-budget cult classic. The film follows the story of a student named Joel (played by James Bond III). Joel returns to his hometown after completing his studies and finds himself drawn into a dark and supernatural world.
